Designed a solution tailored to the facility's unique demands

Ice arenas present one of the most acoustically challenging environments in commercial audio — hard reflective surfaces on all sides, background noise from compressors and refrigeration systems, and the need for clear, powerful sound across a massive open space. When Prairie Lakes Ice Arena in Watertown, South Dakota needed a sound system upgrade across both of its rinks, Mid States Audio & Video designed a solution tailored to the facility's unique demands.

The installation spans two full ice rinks, each requiring independent audio control and coverage. JBL loudspeakers were selected for the project, providing the throw and pattern control needed to push clear sound across the length of the ice and into the seating areas without creating muddy reflections off the boards and glass. JBL's commercial speaker systems are a go-to choice for large, open sports venues precisely because of their ability to cut through ambient noise and deliver intelligible audio at a distance.

Crown amplifiers power the system, bringing professional-grade reliability and headroom to the installation. Crown's amplifier technology is widely used in demanding commercial applications where consistent performance and long-term durability are non-negotiable. System control is handled by a QSC platform, providing centralized management of both rinks from a single interface. QSC's control ecosystem allows staff to adjust levels, switch inputs, and manage zones across the entire facility efficiently.

Shure wireless microphones round out the system, delivering clean, dependable wireless audio for on-ice announcements, event hosts, and public address needs.
